D.A.R.E. Kids in Action

The radio spots below were created by 595 D.A.R.E. graduates in Kamploops BC as a part of a student-driven Public Service Announcement Campaign about D.A.R.E. coordinated by Kamploops D.A.R.E. Officer Cst. Natalie Anfield.   The PSAs will air thoughout the 2010/2011 school year on Radio NL, The River and Country 103.

Cst. Anfield's Story:  "Last year was my first year as a DARE officer. I had the pleasure and privilege of presenting DARE at 18 schools in Kamloops. The principals, teachers, support workers and parents that I had the opportunity to work with were very supportive and instantly made me feel at home in their schools. My kids, all 595 DARE Graduates, and I had a fantastic time and they certainly helped me love my job.

During the course of the year, I recruited retired sergeant Fred Bott to help me out with sponsorship. Fred was my boss in Chase and was the best community policeman I had ever met. If you know Fred, you know I had an ace in my pocket. Over lunch one day, Fred told me about a new job he was trying out at the local radio station. By the end of lunch we had hatched a plan to approach the radio station for a student-driven public service announcement campaign. I am happy to tell you that the idea was met with enthusiasm by Jim Reynolds, the operations manager, at NL Radio and by my bosses.

I then challenged my D.A.R.E. graduates to write their own Public Service Announcements about D.A.R.E. The scripts I received from the kids were very creative and informative. Last week, we attended the radio station and the kids recorded our first two public service announcements. We had a blast at the radio station and Jeff Bolt, the production manager was great with the kids. We are planning on recording many more PSAs and they will be aired throughout the year on Radio NL, The River and Country 103. The kids are so excited to hear themselves on the radio. I have to admit, I'm pretty excited too.

This experience has helped the students to feel more empowered as ambassadors for D.A.R.E. and more comfortable about professing what they know is right! It's pretty easy for kids to take part in D.A.R.E. and feel like they know how to recognize and resist social pressures to experiment with drugs and alcohol. To actually affirm their beliefs about the benefits of D.A.R.E. in a public forum such as radio represents a huge step for them and attests to the success of the D.A.R.E. program.

My sincere thanks to the principals, teachers and staff of Radio NL who have helped make this project a reality. I could not have done it without their help.
