About Us

D.A.R.E. BC is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1999 by a small group of community-minded parents, teachers and police officers who set out to provide drug and alcohol abuse prevention programs to students in and around Prince George, British Columbia.  Through their hard work and dedication, and that of the volunteers and supporters who followed, D.A.R.E. prevention programs are now taught to children in all regions of BC.  More than 30,000 students receive the program every year!

D.A.R.E. prevention programs are designed to equip school children with skills to recognize and resist social pressures to experiment with tobacco, alcohol, other drugs and violence. This unique program utilizes uniformed law enforcement officers to teach a formal curriculum to students in a classroom setting. D.A.R.E. gives special attention to fifth and sixth grade students to prepare them for entry into intermediate & high school, where they are most likely to encounter pressure to use drugs.

It’s important to note that D.A.R.E. prevention programs go beyond traditional drug abuse prevention and “just say no” programs. D.A.R.E. programs provide children with an effective model for making wise and healthy decisions throughout their lifetimes; the D.A.R.E. decision making model (Define Assess Respond Evaluate).

Of 5,337 students surveyed in 2007, 93% agreed that D.A.R.E. taught them new ways to make good decisions about alcohol, tobacco and drugs, and 95% felt D.A.R.E. helped them decide against using drugs in the future. The programs are also unique in that they encourage family/school connectedness, and success at school.  Research  has shown that these are important protective factors in building resiliency  in  students  who  may be  at  risk for  substance and alcohol  abuse.
