Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) is a comprehensive prevention education program designed to equip school children with skills to recognize and resist social pressures to experiment with tobacco, alcohol, other drugs and violence. This unique program utilizes uniformed law enforcement officers to teach a formal curriculum to students in a classroom setting. D.A.R.E. gives special attention to fifth and sixth grade students to prepare them for entry into intermediate & high school, where they are most likely to encounter pressure to use drugs.

The D.A.R.E. program curriculum focuses on providing children with the following:

  1. Decision-making skills that help them stay in charge of their lives
    • Define – Describe the problem, challenge, or opportunity.
    • Assess – What are your choices?
    • Respond – Make a choice. Use the facts and information you have gathered.
    • Evaluate – Review your decision. Did you make a good choice?
  2. Resistance skills so they can refuse offers of drugs in a confident manner
  3. Knowledge and practice to recognize and resist peer pressure
  4. Basic information about tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs and their harmful effects on their developing bodies and brains
  5. Positive alternatives to drug use and violent behaviour
  6. Affirmation that the majority of kids do not use drugs
  7. A positive atmosphere for students to interact with uniformed law enforcement officers
